Orfeu Mestiço: a brazilian hip-hopera

I arrive now in London, after 3 months in Brazil, working in the production: ‘Orfeu Mestiço: a brazilian hip-hopera’, by Nucleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos Theatre Group.

The hip-hopera tells the myth of Orpheus but is adapted to fit in Brazil during the military dictatorship, on the 60’s/70s.

The play combines the virtuosity of the opera to the elements of urban popular culture.

In its eighth production,  the theater group, which is precursor to join the theater to the elements of hip-hop culture, innovates once again by staging the first BrazilianHip-Hopera. The actors and musicians give life to poetry, and the lyrics written by Claudia Schapira, are sang in chorus telling the saga of Orpheus and the Brazilian people.

With six actors on stage, “Orpheus Mestizo” chronicles the return of a politician tied to his past military dictatorship, which for years tried to forget. All the drama takes place in space designed by set designer Daniela Thomas. In the play, characters from different periods accompany Orpheus in his descent into hell.
Daniela Thomas is one of the most incredible set designers in Brazil. I has the privilege To work side by side with her assistants Mari Alves Pinto and Stella Tennembaum as I was producing all set and costume for the play.
I was working everyday on the theatre following the rehearsals and the evolvement of the piece while coordinating the set being built.

‘clowning around’

I am working as a production designer for a short film, directed by Damien Cullen, ‘Clowning Around’.

We are in first stages of ideas, and today I had the second meeting with the crew… The color palette is starting to create shape, together with the costume and the photography. We intend to create a ‘lomo’ look, with light and soft colors on the background but having vivid colors on the character’s costumes.

the exhibition of my work

Exhibiting my work for the degree show of Performance Design & Practice @ Central Saint Martins, It wasn’t an easy task.

After 3 years of intense work and so diverse projects and collaborations, I chose 3 of those to present at the final exhibition.

On a black space, I had my 3 best projects: the video and sound installation ‘Saray’, the proposal of multimedia performance “Fast,Past, Present’ and the movement piece ‘Unwrapped’, done in collaboration with Marta Quilleri and irineu Nogueira.

The projects had a 3 screen with a video of the piece and some images.

When I got to the Prague QD of Performative Space, in which Brazil won the Golden Prize, I saw that they displayed the projects in the same way I did for my degree show, always having TV screens showing videos of the actual performance.

Nowadays the moving image is so powerful, and for the viewer to understand the piece, only photographs and models are not accurate, because you don’t get the idea of the space WITH MOVEMENT.

‘Unwrapped’ explores the edge of human curiosity. This dance piece brings to life the invisible and subtle actions lead by the relation between a human being and the unknown.

‘Pornomuro’ is a performance with projections that I’ve developed and applied for a multi-media festival.

The story is as it follows: My friend Chico Urbanus and his father have a world music label called Sterns Music, and their cafe closed one year and a half ago. One of the walls of the cafe was painted by an amazing artist called Kofi Ankobra and considering that the cafe was going to be transformed into a coral bookmakers and the new owners of the place were going to paint that wall white, we wanted to do something to document it and somehow transform it into art.

Our friend Vitoria was living here in London at that time and suggested she could take part on the performance. So I created a project and applied for the festival. As a study for the project we’ve done a shooting night in front of the wall and called it ‘pornomuro’.

It was photographed by Azul Serra, produced and art directed by me and had the great collaboration of Chico Urbanus and Amelia Prazak. (there are great shots on Azul’s website)

inspiration for composition

the edge of love” is the kind of film that doesn’t inspire me as a story, but in terms of composition, colors, art direction, props, costume design is absolutely fabulous!!!!!!!! When I was watching, during some shots it was almost unbelievable how beautiful was the composition.

The shots from the top are incredible, I’ve done it on Jack Malchance episode 3.

the cinematography as well is stunning; normally when a film visually attracts me, is the cinematography and art dptm together having a great composition of textures, light and colors.

If I would show any reference of my ideal work as production designer It would be this film.
